Wildlife Victoria Statement - 05/09/2025

September 5th, 2025

We are deeply saddened to hear about the death of two women yesterday evening who had stopped to render assistance to an injured Kangaroo. It is deeply sad and horrifying that these individuals died while caring for our most precious wildlife.

We urge people to always prioritise their own safety, and only stop to offer assistance when it is safe to do so.  If you see injured wildlife on the roadside, please call it into Wildlife Victoria’s Emergency Response Service as soon as possible on 03 8400 7300. Our Emergency Response Service will coordinate a response through police and/or volunteers to attend.

If you are pulling over, ensure there is a safe place to do, keep your distance from the injured animal and have your hazard lights on.

Wildlife Victoria’s Emergency Response Service did not receive any cases within the vicinity of the incident at that time. We are not yet aware of all the circumstances surrounding this tragedy, as the police investigation is still ongoing.

Our hearts go out to the victims’ families and everyone impacted by this tragedy.
