Volunteering with Wildlife Victoria

PDF Print
A robust team of over 500 volunteers bring energy, experience and a range of skills to support the mission and work undertaken by Wildlife Victoria. As a team we continually strive to provide high standards of service and care to sick, injured and orphaned wildlife and the Victorian community. Our Volunteers’ contribution of time and dedication is crucial to the success of Wildlife Victoria.

“A volunteer is a member of the community who provides a service, which is of benefit to the community, without expectation of monetary reward. Volunteers undertake activities that ‘add to’ but do not replace the services provided by paid staff”. (Wildlife Victoria support the Definitions & Principles of Volunteering as adopted by Volunteering Australia).

All volunteers engaged by Wildlife Victoria enjoy full induction, mentoring, training and ongoing support to develop their skills, ensuring they remain confident they are part of the states number one wildlife organisation. Volunteers are also supported by the Manager of Volunteer Services and all our volunteers are allocated roles that are clearly outlined by Volunteer Position Descriptions, with clear guidelines for required tasks.

Essential qualities we are seeking in all our Volunteers:

  • Sensitivity to Wildlife rescue and rehabilitation
  • Enthusiastic, professional approach to their work
  • Ability to relate with a wide range of people including distressed members of the public
  • Ability to work alone and unsupervised
  • Ability to remain calm and focused under pressure
  • A keen sense of humour, and ability to respect values of the organisation and others
  • Reliable and flexible nature

Benefits and Rewards of Volunteering with Wildlife Victoria

There are many rewards when becoming a volunteer with Wildlife Victoria. For most of our volunteers it is about the care they provide to our native wildlife and knowing that members of the public can rely on our services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

"Its a great way for me to help - I really feel like I am making a difference" - Emergency Phone Operator.

For many volunteers it is about linking in with their community and the opportunity to develop new skills as well as building confidence and new networks. Wildlife Victoria supports the work undertaken by providing recognition to the contribution and effort made by our volunteers.

“I feel more connected with my community, and I know that by being available to rescue some of our injured critters, I am making a difference in my community” - Transporter

Benefits include working in a fast paced and supportive environment, opportunity to attend and learn about rescue and rehabilitation issues, reimbursement of approved out of pocket expenses, annual events that recognise the contribution made by our team of volunteers, training and development opportunities and full insurance cover while performing an approved volunteer duty.
